Félix Vallotton was an artist who also wrote novels and plays, but is most noted for his black and white illustrations. He painted a large number of writers in black and white, among them Paul Claudel, Isidore Ducasse (Lautréamont), Édouard Dujardin, Félix Fénélon, Alfred Jarry, Éphraïm Mikhaël, Edgar Allan Poe, Pierre Quillard, Jehan-Rictus, Saint-Pol-Roux, Marcel Schwob, Stendal and Henry David Thoreau.
