Félix Vallotton was an artist who also wrote novels and plays, but is most noted for his black and white illustrations. He painted a large number of writers in black and white, among them Paul Claudel, Isidore Ducasse (Lautréamont), Édouard Dujardin, Félix Fénélon, Alfred Jarry, Éphraïm Mikhaël, Edgar Allan Poe, Pierre Quillard, Jehan-Rictus, Saint-Pol-Roux, Marcel Schwob, Stendal and Henry David Thoreau.

Félix Vallotton was a French painter, sculptor, art critic and novelist of Swiss origin. Octave Mirbeau enthused over him, interestingly saying in 1910: 'Comme ceux qui ont beaucoup vu, beaucoup lu, beaucoup réfléchi, il est pessimiste': 'Like those who have seen a great deal, read a great deal, thought a great deal, he is a pessimist'.
