Gabriel Jeanton in Lacroste (71), Saône-et-Loire (71)

The Jeanton tomb in Lacroste is a family one and I could see no mention of Gabriel Jeanton on it. However, a plaque at the side of it reveals a number of things about Lacroste's most famous son. He was born in Lacroste and lived in the family house, now 5 Rue Gabriel Jeanton. He left for Paris, where he obtained a doctorate in Law in 1906. He directed the Tribune Civil in Mâcon for eighteen years, and was curator of the Musée Greuze in Tournus. He wrote a large number of works on the area around Mâcon and Tournus.

Gabriel Jeanton in Azé (Saône-et-Loire (71))

A Lebanese cedar tree initially planted in a private garden in 1821, now in the centre of Azé and declared a historic monument in 1938 due to Gabriel Jeanton's efforts. I'd originally gone to Azé to photo Jeanton's medallion in the mairie, but I should have checked opening hours and the mairie was closed until 16:00 on Thursdays.

Gabriel Jeanton in Tournus (Saône-et-Loire (71))

As it says under the street sign bearing his name, Gabriel Jeanton (1881-1943) was an archaelogist, a historian and a folklorist from Tournus, although he was born in Mâcon and died in Lacrost. He was particularly interested in the culture of the département Saône-et-Loire. Among other things, he was curator of the museum in Tournus, president of the Académie des sciences, arts et Belles Lettres in Mâcon from 1925 from 1935 and president of the Société des amis des arts et des sciences de Tournus (SAAST). He is the author of a great number of local history publications.
