Ebenezer Cobham Brewer's Grave, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire

Seven years ago Alan Smith sent me a photo of Ebenezer Cobham Brewer's grave in Ewinstowe, which had been restored after lying with its cross broken for a number of years. As I no longer live in the Nottingham area and spend several months in France every year these days, I don't often get the opportunity to visit much in England. Here though, is the relatively new cross and base photographed today: I noted that Brewer's name is still legible, but wonder for how long. As a reminder, this is what the brand new cross was like in September 2012:

I've just received an email with the really good news that the grave of the writer Ebenezer Cobham Brewer in St Mary's churchyard in Edwinstowe has now been restored. In April 2010 I posted a few shots of the vandalized grave, and the same August I followed up with another post, this time with a photo of Brewer's ghostly face hovering over the graveyard. That inventive photo was created by Edwinstowe local and retired professional photographer Alan Smith, the same person who sent me the email and who took the above photo. Many thanks, Alan.

As yet we don't know who did this good deed, but I'll add the information when I find out.

Addendum: Alan now informs me:

'The works were added to an existing programme of headstone repairs at a number of closed churchyards and were included in the overall cost of £42,000. Authorized by Phil Beard, Business Manager – Parks & Amenities, Newark & Sherwood District Council. The repairs were carried out under the main contract by D & M Monumental Masons from Arnold. – it was free of charge believe it or not.'

The grave of the writer Ebenezer Cobham Brewer, originator of Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, has been vandalized, and Brewer's ghost looks on in puzzlement. My original post has a few photos of the unfortunate present state of Brewer's grave. But now, it is hoped that something can be done to restore things.

The Rev Dr Ebenezer Cobham Brewer, and Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire

The Rev Dr Ebenezer Cobham Brewer wrote forty books on various subjects, from scripture to book-keeping, but is most noted for what became known as Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. He spent his last years in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, and is buried in the parish church of St Mary's.

There is a sign near the church entrance which relates that the (legendary) Robin Hood and Maid Marian were said to have been married in Edwinstowe. And this legend is one that the village exploits in its pubs and shops, and recently in a large metal sculpture of the pair in a prominent position in the High Street. The stories of Robin Hood are full of action, excitement, and of course romance: this is Kevin Costner country, certainly, but Ebenezer Cobham Brewer is no such Hollywood attraction, and his grave lies — that being the operative word — in a lamentable state:

His cross has fallen, and there are no apparent attempts to put it back. How it is possible to allow an important man to be forgotten, and yet an imaginary couple to be feted so? OK, a man who had his bed-sitting room walls covered in white paper so he could write on them is not quite as sexy as a young, handsome pair, is he? He's not bringing any money in for the village either, is he?
