The Grouse Inn is a rather remote pub on the moors between Glossop and Hayfield, Derbyshire. Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) stayed at this inn in 1908 when he was at Manchester University: he was researching aeroplane design, using kites. Wittgenstein met physicist Dr William Eccles (1875–1966) – who was researching upper atmospheric meteorology – at the inn, where they shared a room for meals and writing.
