Nan Scott in Holme, near Newark, Nottinghamshire

St Giles church, Holme, Nottinghamshire

Local legend has it that to escape the plague in 1666, Nan Scott gathered provisions and went to live for several weeks in a room above the south porch in Holme parish church (see above). She saw a number of burials in the churchyard and when she emerged only met one surviving villager. She then retired back to her room until her death.
