Alfred Capus (1858–1922), born in Aix-en-Provence, was a novelist and playwright who also wrote for Le Figaro under the pseudonym Canalis and Graindorge (lit. 'grain of barley'). His plays were many, for which he received a great deal of praise, notably from Robert de Flers. He only wrote four novels, of which his first, Qui perd gagne (1890) (lit. 'Who loses wins') was called a 'near masterpiece' by the critic Jules Lemaitre.
