Allan Kardec (1804–69) was born Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail. He was a teacher and also the founder of the philosophy Spiritism, which is still followed internationally today. He changed his name in 1855, the same time as he discovered turning tables. His principal written works are Le Livre des Esprits (1857) and Le Livre des médiums (1861).
