'HERE ON THIS SITE STOOD THE BIRTH
-PLACE OF HENRY KIRKE WHITE
POET – – BORN MARCH 31ST 1785
DIED AT CAMBRIDGE OCT 19TH 1806'

This plaque is inside the Exchange Arcade at the Cheapside side of the Council House.

Born in Nottingham the son of a butcher, White went on to publish Clifton Grove in 1803, which made an impression on Robert Southey. However, he died in Cambridge at the age of 21 after excessive study. He is remembered in the names of several streets and in two memorials in St Wilfrids Church, Wilford, Nottingham.

A 1906 article from Transactions of the Thoroton Society on Henry Kirke White, by J. C. Warren, is here.
