Cimetière du Montparnasse (continued) #6: Emmanuel Berl

In his novel Sylvia (1952) Emmanuel Berl (1807–41) fictionalises the argument he had with Proust over the nature of love. Berl had a rather erratic love life, marrying and then taking the prostitute Suzanne Muzard as a mistress, later marrying her. His third and last wife was the singer Mireille, whom he married in 1937. Berl's politics were left-wing and pacifist.
