Pierre Overney (1948–72), a former worker at Renault, was killed in an incident involving the far-left group Gauche prolétarienne – of which he was a member – outside the Renault gates on 25 February 1972 by security guard Jean-Antoine Tramoni. His funeral was also a demonstration in which 200,000 people took part, Jean-Paul Sartre in a prominent position and Michel Foucault in the crowd. Tramoni was sentenced to four years' imprisonment and was assassinated in 1977, although his killers were never found.
