Some interesting literary associations: Robert de Flers was at the lycée Condorcet with Proust, married Geneviève Sardou (daughter of the playwright Victorien Sardou), and his secretary was Gaston Gallimard, the founder of the publishing house. An early journey to the east following his studies inspired the stories La Courtisane Taïa et son singe vert (1896) and Ilsée, princesse de Tripoli (1897), plus the account Vers l'Orient (1896), although he was to be far better known for his many plays. These were initially vaudevilles produced in collaboration with Gaston Arman de Caillavet until his death in 1915, and after the war he continued producing plays in collaboration with Francis de Croisset.
