Cimetière du Père-Lachaise (continued): #32: Sophie Cottin

Sophie Cottin (1770–1807) was born Marie Risteau, and her first novel, Claire d'Albe (1789), was published anonymously. Her second novel was Malvina (1800), which was a great success, as was her third, Amélie Mansfield (1802). Then followed Mathilde ou Mémoires tirés de l’histoire des croisades (1805), but Élisabeth ou les Exilés de Sibérie (1806) was her last completed novel because she died at a mere thirty-seven years the following year. (She also wrote poetry, but refused to publish any.)
