Novelist and playwright Amédée Achard (1814–75) was born in Marseille, where he studied at the lycée Thiers. He wrote enormously, about fifteen plays and forty novels, many of which were cloak and dagger stories (in French cape et épée – literally 'cloak and sword'), of which his La Cape et l'épée (1875) is an obvious example. Apparently Alexandre Dumas père was an admirer of his work.
