Riceyman Steps and Arnold Bennett, Clerkenwell: London #25

'Near this site
stood
Henry Earlforward's
bookshop in
Arnold Bennett's
1923 novel
Riceyman Steps
set in
Clerkenwell'

Gwynne Place is near the plaque on Kings Cross Road, and these are the steps that Bennett had in mind as 'Riceyman Steps', divided, as in the book, in two tiers, although there are more than Bennett's twenty.

Within a few yards of Granville Square ('Riceyman Square' in the novel), which is at the top of the steps, is this building in Lloyd Baker Street named 'Riceyman House' after the novel.
